Disorders

Substance use disorders are complex conditions in which an individual has an uncontrolled use of a substance despite harmful consequences.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition characterised by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences (NIAAA, 2020).

Approximately 280 million people suffer with alcohol use disorder (AUD) worldwide (World Health Organisation, 2024) with around 3 million deaths each year attributed to the harmful use of alcohol (World Health Organisation, 2024).
Less than 20% of individuals with AUD get any treatment (Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2022) and there is a 40-60% lifetime relapse rate associated with the condition (Psychopharmacology, 2018).
These conditions carry a significant burden not only on the people living with the condition but also their family, community, healthcare system and society more broadly. There is an urgent demand for better, faster-acting and more effective medical treatments.
